At Atelier Maison & Co., we carefully source everything we sell with this in mind. If a client wants something completely nontoxic, we can source that specifically for them. For everything else, we follow a chain of custody that prioritizes low-VOC materials, meaning low volatile organic compound emissions, across most of what we carry.

Even with careful sourcing, though, furniture still arrives wrapped in plastic and cardboard, which traps whatever offgassing is happening during shipping. Because of that, every piece that comes into our warehouse gets unwrapped and inspected, and then it sits, unwrapped, for a minimum of seven days before it’s ever brought into the showroom or delivered to a customer’s home. That waiting period gives the piece time to release the bulk of its initial offgassing in our space, not yours.

Engineered woods like MDF, plywood, and particleboard commonly use adhesives containing urea-formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. If engineered wood is unavoidable, look for CARB2 compliance, which is a California standard that limits formaldehyde emissions. Metal and glass, including powder-coated steel, recycled aluminum, tempered glass, and natural stone, are naturally zero-VOC and don’t require chemical treatment at all.

Cushioning and Fill

Natural latex, made from the sap of rubber trees, is the gold standard for nontoxic cushions and mattresses. It’s naturally dust-mite resistant and doesn’t require chemical flame retardants. Standard polyurethane foam, by contrast, is highly flammable and has historically been treated with toxic flame retardants to compensate.

Upholstery and Textiles

Natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, hemp, and wool are the safer choice for upholstery. Wool in particular is valuable because it acts as a natural, chemical-free fire barrier on its own. Any wood stains, paints, or lacquers should be explicitly labeled zero-VOC or water-based, or use natural options like linseed or tung oil.

Certifications Worth Trusting

Terms like “eco-friendly” and “green” aren’t regulated, so they don’t tell you much on their own. What actually matters are independent, third-party certifications. Here are the ones we trust.

GREENGUARD Gold means a product has been tested in a chamber for emissions of over 10,000 chemicals, and the Gold standard is strict enough to be used in schools and healthcare facilities. It’s the best certification to look for on whole pieces of furniture, cribs, and mattresses.

GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, is the gold standard for fabrics. It requires a textile to be at least 95 percent organic and verifies the entire supply chain was free of toxic dyes, bleaches, and finishes. Look for it on upholstery, bedding, and pillows.

GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard, ensures latex is over 95 percent organic and tests the finished product for heavy metals, VOCs, and pesticides. This is the one to check for cushions and mattresses.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished fabric for over 1,000 harmful substances, including heavy metals, toxic dyes, and formaldehyde, and applies specifically to upholstery fabrics.

MADE SAFE is one of the strictest certifications available. It screens products against an extensive database of known toxic chemicals, endocrine disruptors, and carcinogens, and is especially relevant for mattresses, bedding, and smaller furniture items.

FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council certification, isn’t a toxicity standard, but it guarantees solid wood was harvested from responsibly managed forests rather than illegally logged or clear-cut. Look for it on wood frames, tables, and case goods.

CertiPUR-US applies specifically to polyurethane foam. It ensures the foam was made without ozone depleters, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and certain flame retardants, and has low VOC emissions. It still allows synthetic foam, but it’s the safest version of that foam you’ll find. This is the one to check on couches and foam mattresses.

What You Can Do Right Now

If you’re not in a position to replace every piece of furniture you own, there’s good news. Existing furniture has typically already gone through most of its offgassing cycle, so what’s already in your home is usually far less of a concern than what you’re about to bring in new.

Before buying something new, the sniff test is a genuinely useful first step. If a piece has a strong chemical smell in the showroom, that’s a real signal, not just an unpleasant scent. It’s also worth knowing that offgassing cycles vary enormously by product. Some pieces finish releasing chemicals within a week. Others continue for years.

If replacing everything at once isn’t realistic financially, we always recommend upgrading one piece at a time rather than doing nothing. Start with whatever you spend the most time near, like a mattress or a primary sofa, and work outward from there as your budget allows.

How Do I Protect My New Furniture?

The $600 Policy That Saved Two Chairs

I want to start with a story because it makes the case for furniture protection better than I ever could on my own. A client of ours bought a full living and dining room set from Atelier Maison & Co., right around $30,000 total. If you want extra cleaning power without introducing anything toxic, a small amount of vinegar mixed in works well too. This basic method handles the majority of everyday spills and dirt without damaging the fabric or finish.

Leather and Suede Require Completely Different Care

Leather and suede are both beautiful, durable materials, but they need entirely different maintenance routines. Leather needs to stay hydrated and supple. Suede needs to stay dry to protect its textured nap. Treating one like the other is one of the fastest ways to damage either.

• Keep leather furniture at least two feet from heat sources like vents, radiators, and fireplaces, and out of direct, continuous sunlight to prevent fading and cracking.

Caring for Suede

Suede is far more porous than smooth leather and highly susceptible to water damage and crushing. The goal is to keep it dry and keep the fibers fluffed.

• Vacuum weekly using the upholstery attachment, since dust settles into the nap and dulls the appearance over time.
• Brush it regularly with a suede-cleaning brush, using sweeping circular motions to lift the nap, restore texture, and loosen dried dirt.
• If a liquid spills, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub, since rubbing pushes the liquid deeper into the porous fibers.
• For stains, use a suede-specific cleaner or eraser. A clean white pencil eraser can even work in a pinch for dry scuffs. For deeper cleaning, use a suede shampoo or a cloth lightly dampened with white vinegar, then brush the area once it dries.
• When the furniture is new, or after a deep clean, apply a suede protector spray. This creates a temporary liquid-repelling shield that buys you time if a spill happens.

When kids and pets are part of the equation, the fabric you choose matters more than almost any other decision you’ll make. Performance fabrics like Crypton, Sunbrella, and Revolution are synthetic blends engineered specifically for high-traffic homes, and they’re the top recommendation from interior designers for families. They’re tightly woven to resist claw snags, and the fibers are often solution-dyed, meaning the color runs all the way through the thread, making them highly resistant to fading and staining. Liquids actually bead up on the surface, giving you time to wipe them away before they soak in. They also mimic higher-end materials like linen, velvet, or boucle, so you’re not sacrificing style for durability. These are best for homes with heavy traffic, puppies, toddlers, or anyone who wants to eat on the couch without anxiety.

Microfiber and Microsuede: The Best Value

Microfiber is made of ultra-fine synthetic threads woven tightly together. It’s highly stain-resistant, affordable, and soft, and the tight weave keeps dust, pet hair, and dander from penetrating, so it’s easy to vacuum or wipe clean. Cats also tend to dislike it, since their claws can’t get a good grip on the smooth, tight weave. The tradeoff is that it can look a bit dated depending on the style, and it tends to show shading or handprints when brushed against the nap.

If you have kids or pets at home, I’d steer clear of both unless you’re using a performance-treated version.

It doesn’t take a heat wave or a full afternoon of exposure either. Consistent, direct sun over months will fade fabric, dry out leather, and unevenly discolor wood finishes, often before anyone notices it’s happening.

If you have furniture near a window that gets strong afternoon light, consider UV-filtering window film, sheer curtains, or simply rotating cushions and pieces periodically so the fading, if it happens, happens evenly rather than leaving an obvious sun-faded patch on one side of a sofa.

That’s not your imagination, and it’s not bad luck. Most furniture sold today is built to a lifespan of roughly five to seven years. Not because that’s all the materials are capable of, but because that’s what the business model calls for.

Heirloom-quality furniture is built to a different standard entirely. Built well, a solid wood piece with proper joinery should last twenty-five to thirty years, long enough to pass from one generation to the next, which is where the word heirloom actually comes from. The problem is that most buyers never find out they’re purchasing on that timeline. A dresser that costs $900 and lasts six years actually costs more per year of use than one that costs $2,400 and lasts thirty. The price tag tells you what you’re paying today. It doesn’t tell you what you’re actually buying.

How Heirloom Furniture Is Built Differently

The difference between five years and thirty years isn’t hidden in the finish. It’s hidden in the joints, and after years in this business, I can tell you exactly where to look.

Drawers and Joinery

A drawer built to last uses hand-cut or precision-milled dovetail joints, where the wood itself interlocks under tension. The more weight and use it takes, the tighter it holds. A drawer built to a five-year lifespan is more often stapled, glued, or doweled at the corners, which holds up fine until repeated use works the joint loose. At that point there’s nothing left holding it together but adhesive.

Case Pieces

A dresser, credenza, or sideboard built for longevity uses mortise-and-tenon joinery at every structural point, kiln-dried solid wood that’s been allowed to acclimate before assembly so it won’t warp or crack, and a hand-applied finish that penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it as a sprayed coating. A piece built for a shorter lifespan more often uses engineered wood or veneer over particleboard, corner brackets and cam-lock fasteners instead of true joinery, and a finish designed to look good on day one rather than age well over decades.

Upholstered Frames

Upholstered furniture follows the same pattern. A frame built to last is kiln-dried hardwood, doweled and glued at every joint, with eight-way hand-tied springs. A frame built to a shorter lifespan is often softwood or plywood, stapled rather than joined, with sinuous wire or webbing in place of hand-tied springs. Lighter, cheaper, and noticeably shorter-lived under daily use.
None of this is visible from a showroom floor unless you know where to look, which is exactly why I think it’s worth asking.

The Proof Walks Through Our Door

I hear some version of this story on a regular basis, and it’s one of my favorite parts of this business. Customers like Lee and Cisco come in not because their furniture failed, but because it didn’t. They bought their sofas twenty-five years ago, raised four kids and two dogs on them, and the frame is exactly as solid today as it was the day it left the workshop. The only thing they’ve ever needed from us is reupholstering, because fabric wears out decades before a properly built frame ever will.
That’s the real test of heirloom quality. Not whether a piece survives being sat on once, but whether it survives a family growing up on it and still has enough structural life left afterward to be worth dressing back up rather than throwing away. A frame that lasts is what makes reupholstering possible in the first place. Replace the fabric on a piece with a five-year frame, and you’re just delaying the inevitable by a season or two. Run the actual math and the whole story changes. A big-box dresser at $900 with a six-year lifespan costs $150 a year, plus the cost and disruption of replacing it. An heirloom-quality dresser at $2,400 with a thirty-year lifespan costs $80 a year, and it’s still functional, still repairable, and often still gaining character rather than falling apart.

In my experience, heirloom furniture isn’t actually the more expensive option. Over the life of the piece, it’s usually the cheaper one. It just asks you to pay more up front to get there.

How to Tell the Difference When You’re Shopping

You don’t need to be a furniture maker to spot the difference. Here’s what I tell people to check before they buy:

• Pull a drawer fully open and look at the corners. Dovetails versus staples tell you almost everything.
• Check the weight. Solid wood is heavier than particleboard or veneer of the same size.
• Ask what’s inside an upholstered frame. Any maker who can answer specifically, down to the joinery and spring type, is building to a different standard than one who can’t.
• Ask how long the piece is expected to last, and watch for a vague answer. A maker who’s built for durability will have a real number.
